TCM / Gearbox Module Repair (ISM & DSM)

SVC-TCM-05

Gear selector stuck in park, gearbox in limp mode, or no drive at all — transmission control electronics fail predictably, and we repair them at board level.

// What fails

Automatic gearboxes are run by their own control modules: the TCM/TCU inside or beside the gearbox, and on many Mercedes models the ISM or DSM intelligent servo module that physically moves the selector. Heat, vibration and oil ingress kill conductor plates, speed sensors and the module electronics themselves.

The classic Mercedes failure is the selector refusing to leave park — the ISM/DSM no longer responding. These modules are VIN-locked, so a used replacement will not simply work; we repair or clone your original so the gearbox adaptations and coding survive.

Symptoms we see every week

  • Mercedes gear selector stuck in park, or will not engage drive
  • Gearbox stuck in limp-home mode (one gear only)
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifting that diagnostics traces to the TCM
  • Gear display blank or flashing on the dash
  • No communication with the transmission module

Our process

  1. DiagnoseThe fault is confirmed with proper diagnostics and board inspection before any work is quoted.
  2. RepairComponent-level repair on your original unit — coding, keys and adaptations preserved.
  3. Bench testThe repaired unit is proven on the bench under realistic conditions before it goes back.
  4. WarrantyWork is covered by our workshop warranty, with terms confirmed in writing on your quote.

Repaired modules are exercised on the bench, and on Mercedes ISM/DSM work we verify selector actuation through full P-R-N-D cycles before return. Where a module is beyond repair we clone your data to a donor so the car keeps its adaptations.

Frequently asked questions

My Mercedes is stuck in park — can it be towed or driven?

There is a mechanical override on many models for moving the car, but do not force the selector. Call us first — depending on the chassis we may be able to attend with a mobile visit or arrange the module to be removed and repaired.

Is repairing the ISM/DSM better than a used replacement?

Yes, in almost every case. These modules are matched to the car’s VIN, so a second-hand unit needs work to be accepted — and inherits unknown wear. Repairing or cloning your original keeps everything matched.

Will my gearbox need re-adaptation after the repair?

Usually not, because your original data is preserved. If a road-test adaptation cycle is sensible, we will say so when the module goes back.

Do you cover non-Mercedes transmission modules?

Yes — we take on TCM/TCU repair across other makes too. Send the part number from the module and we will confirm whether it is repairable.
