Instrument Cluster Repair & Programming

SVC-IC-06

Dead displays, dropping gauges, missing pixels — the dashboard cluster is electronics like any other module, and most faults are repairable on the original unit.

// What fails

Instrument clusters fail in familiar ways: display ribbons lose contact and pixels vanish, backlighting dies, stepper-motor gauges stick or sweep randomly, and power-supply faults kill the whole dash. On many cars the cluster also holds immobiliser and mileage data, so it is part of the start chain — a dead cluster can mean a car that will not start at all.

Because of that stored data, swapping in a used cluster is rarely straightforward and can leave mismatched mileage. Repairing your original keeps the car honest and the coding intact.

Symptoms we see every week

  • LCD display dead, dim or missing pixels
  • Gauges stuck, jumping or sweeping erratically
  • Cluster completely dead — sometimes with a no-start
  • Backlighting failed on part or all of the dash
  • Warning lights on permanently with no underlying fault

Our process

  1. DiagnoseThe fault is confirmed with proper diagnostics and board inspection before any work is quoted.
  2. RepairComponent-level repair on your original unit — coding, keys and adaptations preserved.
  3. Bench testThe repaired unit is proven on the bench under realistic conditions before it goes back.
  4. WarrantyWork is covered by our workshop warranty, with terms confirmed in writing on your quote.

Cluster repairs are tested on the bench with simulated inputs — gauges swept through their range, displays soak-tested, and communication verified — before the unit is returned with its original mileage and coding untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Will my mileage stay correct after a cluster repair?

Yes. We repair your original cluster, so the genuine mileage and coding stay exactly as they are. We do not alter odometer readings.

My car will not start and the dash is dead — is that the cluster?

It can be, because on many cars the cluster sits in the immobiliser chain. It can also be the ignition switch or a power-supply fault, so describe the symptoms and we will point you at the right diagnosis first.

Can you fix missing pixels in the display?

Usually yes — faded or missing pixels are typically a ribbon-cable bonding fault, which is a well-understood repair. Complete display replacements are possible on many clusters too.

Do I have to remove the cluster myself?

No. You can bring the car to the Basingstoke workshop, book a mobile visit across London and the South East, or remove and post the cluster if you are comfortable doing so. We will advise on the phone.
