// Official meaning
Soft accumulator — the preload pressure in the SBC hydraulic accumulator is below specification. The accumulator has failed or is failing.
// On the bench
The accumulator is the pressure store the SBC system leans on, and when its precharge drops the pump works harder and the system flags this code. It is a genuine hardware failure: pump rebuild or replacement territory, never a reset.
How it shows up
- SBC warning message on the dash
- Pump running more often than it should
- Code returns after clearing
What fixing it involves
Three honest routes, all through our dedicated SBC workshop at sbc-repair.com: a counter reset (£120 — nothing replaced, only right if the pump tests healthy), a full rebuild of your own unit (£430, 6-month warranty), or an exchange pump (£700, 12-month warranty, no core return). Complete on-car service — repair, reprogram, bleed and initialise — from £650.
Frequently asked questions
Can the accumulator be replaced on its own?
It is dealt with as part of a proper rebuild of the unit — the pump comes apart, the failed parts are replaced and the whole unit is tested before it goes back. £430 on your own unit through sbc-repair.com.
Why does the pump run so often with this fault?
With the accumulator soft, the system cannot hold its pressure reserve, so the pump keeps topping it up. That extra running wears the motor too — another reason not to leave it.
